My Journey with Yoga One and Baptiste Yoga
My journey with Yoga One and Baptiste Yoga started on December 23, 2010. I had friends and family that had been practicing at Yoga One and I saw the physical changes from their practice, but it still took months, maybe even a year to try a class. It wasn’t until I saw Sally, the owner, in a store and asked her about it. “Will it help me be more flexible? I’m running and cycling and I’d love to be more limber,” I told her. Sally told me that it will help with whatever I wanted out of life; flexibility, strength, weight loss, help with relationships, etc. So on the morning of my 37th birthday, I decided to take a class. And that class had such an impact, that I went back the next day, and days after that. The physical challenge felt right at home with how I wanted to move my body. And from the first class I felt a spiritual element that was aligned with the 12 step recovery program I had been going to for many years. In fact, I had been in a rut in my program of recovery and Baptiste Yoga helped reignite the joy I had for living my life fully.
The more I practiced, the more I felt connected to my body. I noticed my cravings for foods changed and I had more energy (even though I was definitely exhausted and wrung out right after class!). I started to get to know the people who worked there and practiced there. They seemed genuinely interested in me and I felt a sense of belonging. I also couldn’t stop talking about Yoga One and the transformation I was experiencing. Shortly after taking my first class, my husband started practicing, then some of my coworkers from the school in which I teach. I thought perhaps one day I’d walk into the lunch room at work and find my coworkers sitting somewhere else. In fact, it was quite the opposite. Apparently they noticed the changes in me and wanted to know more. Pretty soon, many of them began coming. We took classes and workshops and began implementing some of what we learned in our classrooms.
Like many things that feel good to me, I wanted more. In 2012, I signed up for the program 40 Days to a Personal Revolution and Teacher Assistant training. The level of commitment was what I needed to break through some fears of vulnerability and connection that had crept back in. Being a part of the class gave me access to seeing the impact Yoga One and Baptiste Yoga has on so many people in a new way. So in 2013 I took Yoga One’s 200 Hour Teacher Training. This training changed my life. It was a journey into a power within that I didn’t know existed and energetically transformed how I show up in the world. And when I revert back to old ways of being, I have a community that will hold me accountable with compassion and love. There’s a sign on the door at Yoga One that reads, “Come As You Are” and I don’t know that I’ve been anywhere where I have experienced people being seen with love and acceptance as they are and as they are not.
I am a contribution.
